    The swamp of la Virgen is the largest lake in Cartagena, on one of its sides, on the north of the city, we can find the small fishing village of la boquilla and an extense mangrove forest ecosystem that offers refuge to several species of birds and fish.

    This tour offers an Eco-friendly alternative to disconnect from the loud city and and immerse oneself in the richness of nature, interact with the fishermen of la boquilla who have dominated this lands for at least two centuries and who descend from Africans who once were brought to be slaves but found in this part of the city a place to thrive.

    The tour includes a peaceful canoe trip in the waters of the swamp, between the natural tunnels of mangroves giving you the opportunity to spot different species of birds and fish followed by a refreshing cool coconut. Later you will enjoy a typical lunch in front of the beach in one of the restaurants in the village.

    Day 1 : Canoeing & Birdwatching on the Mangrove Forest in La Virgen Swamp itinerary

    To enjoy the best of this experience and avoid the heat of the weather, we’ll pick you up at your accommodation early morning - 7 am and bring you to the fishing village of La Boquilla with is located 8 Kilometers from the Old City on the North way. 

    Your native guide will welcome you on board with fresh coconut and your wooden canoe to explore the mangroves forest of La Virgen Swamp. During the canoeing, you’ll learn about the importance of the swamp for our marine life and the three types of mangroves that we find along the way, interact with the birds and fauna that live in this environment and then head to an island that is part of our history. We’ll drop off the boat to explore the archaeological Museum, enjoy a snack with soft drinks and then get on board again to find our local beach for a typical lunch (catch of the day, coconut rice, patacones, fresh salad and a local beer). Take your time to enjoy the beach, and then we’ll bring you back to your accommodation
