There are approximately 50 lakes in Germany and are extremely popular with locals both in the summer - to swim, sail and hike and in the winter months - to snowshoe and skate. Here are 10 of the Most Picturesque Lakes to visit Germany:

Lake Mummelsee

Legend has it – that a mermaid resides in the lake. It has the most amazing crystal clear waters and stunning views and is a popular stopping point on the Schwarzwaldhochstraße which translated, is a length of beautiful scenic points that you will see if you travel through the Black Forest.

Lake Schluchsee

This is the largest lake in the Black Forest and is often known as the local swimming pool. It is a popular place for sailing in the summer months and skiing and ice skating in the winter. There is a cute little bridge that the trains cross over and if you do fancy a scenic train ride choose Basel or Freiburg as a starting point.

Lake Titisee

This lake was said to be named after the Roman emperor Titus. It lies in the south of the Black Forest and is a popular place to visit. It is perfect place for swimming, sailing. windsurfing and fishing. You can walk around the water front in about 1 1/2 hours along a pleasant pathway.

Lake Constance (Konstanz or Bodensee)

Lake Constance is Germany’s biggest lake and is shared with Switzerland and Austria. As the lake is very large it has a warmer microclimate, making it a popular spring and autumn destination as well as a superb wine growing region.

Lake Königssee (King’s Lake)

This beautiful lake is nestled away in the south eastern tip of Germany (a few minutes’ drive from Salzburg) in the Berchtesgaden National Park. It is surrounded by dramatic cliffs and mountains and is actually the deepest lake in Germany,

Lake Starnberg is about a 30 minute drive from Munich, and has 60 miles of shoreline. The best way to get to enjoy the sights is to take a boat trip, or if you are a walkers then why not explore the beautiful landscape and the various sights on the path that follows all along the shore.

Lake Chiemsee

If you are actually in Salzburg, you can enjoy a trip to Lake Chimesee, as it is just over the border. The lake has two beautiful; one has a charming Benedictine Abbey from the 1200s, and the other island houses a Bavarian castle, which is a ‘must-see’.

Lake Müritz

This is the second largest lake in Germany near to the towns of Waren and Neustrelitz. It is a stunning lake, lined with meadows and lush forests on one side and marshes and swamps on the other side. The popular summer attractions are water sports and biking.

Lake Steinhude

Lake Steinhude is not far from Hanover. It is one of the largest lakes in the north western Germany. It is quite shallow in comparison to other lakes, making it a popular place for all the family to visit and there is a small island with a nature park.
